Daily Classroom Schedule
Ponder Time: The first 5-10 minutes of class are spent, with a question written on the board, writing opinions and personal perspective and brainstorming ideas in a personal composition notebook.
This is followed by 10-15 minutes of discussing what students think and feel about the subject or idea the ponder question touches on.
For 5-10 minutes we discuss and go over any confusion, questions or creative solutions or insights that students had during their homework assignments. Also, the time to go over past quizzes and vocabulary tests.
General Teaching Time: For about 20 minutes this is the time where new instruction and literacy concepts are broken down or dived into as the subject the teacher has previously prepared for the class is given. This is also the time for the review and introduction of new vocabulary words.
Some of the subjects we will be covering are in this language arts class is...
- Forms of Writing: Poetry forms, short story, novel, sonnets, etc.
- Genres of Writing: Mystery, romance, horror, historical. This also includes fiction, nonfiction, myths, bibliographies, research, etc.
- Characteristics of Writing: Plot, character development, climax, resolution, opening hooks.
- Appeals and Author's Motive: Pathos, ethos, etc. What the author is trying to accomplish through their writing.
- Role of the Reader: Open-mindedness, personal perspective, critical thinking.
- Technics of English and Grammar: Punctuation, sentence structure, exceptions in English grammar, etc.
Grammar VS. Storyline
Creative Workshop Time: Now is the break from general instruction and the students are given an opportunity to read or write their own stories, poems or comics. An important part of understanding language is applying what you learn to your own writings. For the reading portion of this time a book review, report or creative writing work based on something from the story must be written. This is the time to work on your Student Creative Literacy Portfolio.
Vocabulary Quiz Time: Chosen to be last in the day to encourage students to be present the duration of the class. This is where the vocabulary of the week or two weeks will be quizzed (multiple choice and fill in the blank with a word bank.
